Day37 Mermaiding

A bit of playing in photoshop and I think the images have some more depth of feeling now. The water ripple effect in the background and then overlayed over her as well gives a more etherial feel to things. Maybe the only thing to play with above this would be some lighting flares or streams.

A little WoWing in Outland to finish up. (DING59)

Day36 Mermaid sketch colouring

Another colouring of an existing sketch, this time the mermaid head.
It is a simple large areas of single colours piece, but it is pretty enough for me to be happy with how it went. I wanted to kep her clean and smooth, I may try some water effects next to see if that helps the mermaid theme.

Day35 Outland and the priestess

Put my application in for the Master of Digital Media at COFA today. Another big step taken - it is just a pity that Nigel is leaving before I would get to see COFAland with him there.

Did a slight edit on the priestess fixing up the chin, some linework and shading. It is better I think but still shows it all as rather simple as these things go. That said I think it has appeal in a nice comic-centric way.

WoW - headed into the new frontier at lev58 - home sweet home. It is certainly a step up in difficulty and rewards. The play style and thematics are still very much the same though - no departures or initiatives really. I do like some of the subtle things like the burrowing bugs, the riding hunters, the infernos and good feeling of conflict and struggle.

Day34 Talks and Heroes

Had some good discussions about future planning in FBE's IT-centric programs.

Ep2 of Heroes - truly awesome! I dont know where the whole or any of the parts are going and the curve-balls are coming thick and fast. It is a jaw dropping moment every few minutes. There arent really any visual effects as yet, but the plotwork and production are spot-on.

SL still doing some strange graphical things - will have to do for the Friday second round presentation.
No WoWing yesterday - so back in again today - DING58. Plaguelands are fun - will be able to visit the homeworld now!! Hopefully that will spark another round of enthusiasm - there could be scope for more when the rest of the 60s return and groups become part of the scene again.

Day33 Colouring the Priestess

Coloured in photoshop the Luna Priestess sketch. The theory came back pretty fast - it is quite a simple treatment, but I like it as my first for a looooong time.
It is a little overdone in places - I might tidy up another night. She certainly has a skinny waist and some of the pencil work is kinda rough when you zoom-in. I might try and 'ink' it or play with editing the sketch layers to fix that up a little (areas like her chin maybe).

I will have to try my tablet for this next time round and try some more effects particularly on the fabric and lighting side.

Read a nice article on Volumetric lighting in the ImagineFX mag by Henning Ludvigsen. The bits about the transparency of skin is very nice. I even say some beautiful volumetric lighting coming into the airport tunnel today - sweet. I will have to give it a try next.

Day32 CSP and such

It seems that the only degree program (masters) in this field that has Commonwealth Supported places (old HECS) is the Digital Media Masters at COFA !!
The converts a very expensive exercise into much more manageable $$$.
Obviously this program will be mac and maya-centric - but perhaps that viewpoint will add value to what I get.

Add some more SL discussion and WoWing to the mix for the day.

Day31 Online

Diving into the online CGart worlds today.
There is a nice little piece in my ImagineFX mag on entering online competitions at sites like: (beware)
The work of people displayed on these sites is inspiring, it can all be done. I need to develop some serious software skills and combine that with some education on the fundamentals of imagery, animation, characterisation, mood and more. It also shows that I have a looong way to go - this is no 5 minute journey.

I will start looking now at not only courses in digital media and related areas, but also taking some serious time off to dedicate enough time and momentum to the task. Maybe halftime, though that will leave BECU running on empty a little.

WoW - should I abandon it, or use it as part of the whole? Being a part of this type of game/online community/3D world of the quality that Blizzard have produced is of significant value. Being able to interact with friends in the environment I hope to be a part of at the production side has value.
With that - more Plaguelands for me!

Watched some of the creation doco on the Final Fantasy DVD, it re-emphasises the great amount of work, thought and energy that goes into something like this. There is definative skill in creating the magic of the whole while engine builds all the myriad of details and parts.
I made a few prelim sketches for a cute animation that might form part of a showreel. A little person playing before looking at the camera - getting a freight and having all their freckles fall off :-)
