DC Animation Contest

The powers behind the upcoming DC Universe Online have fired up an animation contest. Yes, the vid even has Jim Lee asking us to join in and help animate shots using assets and storyboards provided by them. It looks like Maya is the tool and they provide models, rigs, audio and more - we then animate and submit - with the winners working with them to include the animation in some way for the release. The instructions say Maya 2008 only, will have to see if Maya 2010 will be ok.

This is a very interesting idea and I am certainly thinking of trying my hand at some. Though I have other projects I really should be doing. Also interesting that the full site is on Facebook, they are really linking with the idea of community.
I will take a closer look over the next few days...

And here is the E3 trailer to catalyse the enthusiasm:

CG to See

I thought I would just make a quick list of the CG films that I havent seen of late. If you spot any notable omissions, maybe I saw it - what this list shows is how many CG related films there are these days. (images come from the official sites primarily).

District 9________________

GI Joe : Rise of the Cobra________________

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs________________

Terminator 4________________

Then there are things like Avatar coming which I am really looking forward to of course.

2009 Gaming

With this being 'year in review' territory, I enjoyed the edition of All your History are Belong to Us covering 2009's Gaming:

While you are there the risk is being dragged into all the other cool episodes, of which I have only watched a few. I like how gaming gets this much analysis, and history really - good to see.

Note that the Interactive Entertainment 2009 conference is at UNSW this year in only a week - I hope to be able to sample some of it as well.

Youtube New Years Countdown

The absolute phenomenon that is Youtube has a countdown to newyears with a featured vid each day. We already have Date My Avatar on there, nice work Felicia Day. As if these vids didnt have enough hits as it was - lets see what is to come.

The question is will it have Avril the Yawnosaur ??

POPSCI, 3D sport, robots and Virgin Galactic

The POPSCI site has a few stories that grabbed my eye today. First up that the FIFA World Cup will have upto 25 matches filmed in 3D. I havent seen sport in 3D before, but it seems like an obvious application and I can see it enhancing the 'being-there' feel that is sought after.
Then there is the gallery of imagery from Japan's International Robot Exhibition 2009 which is always interesting, seeing how they really love personifying robotics and diving into that uncanny valley with courage.

Plus check out Virgin Galactic's SpaceshipTwo under contruction. The Virgin Galactic official site has lots more info including this trailer/advert:

COFA Annual 2009

The website for the COFA Annual is up. The site showcases the work of graduating students from across the college in a wide array of media all presented in an interesting Flash format.

Here are a few pieces that caught my eye browsing around, though it would be MUCH easier if they had icons/thumbnails as well as names for navigation...
As far as the digital media students, I would check out George - hmm be prepared though...

Plus, I like the title animation as well, the energy of the triangles is great.
