Trailers play such a critical role in the hype that must be generated by media like games and films. So companies spend a huge amount of effort (and $$) making them for us. Trailers are little pieces of art all by themselves drawing on snippets of info often long before things are ready for us.
This post is perhaps just an excuse to feature a few that I think get the hype working for their respective titles, but they are cool examples.
With the mighty Joss Whedon at the helm, and a rollcall of superheroes all coming off an unprecedented suite of build-up films - the Avengers is as big as this genre gets. So is this itty trailer from the Superbowl successful? We get flashes of all the signature actors, the famous costumes and the chaos that they are assembling to take on. We dont see much else, but it certainly highlights that this movie is all about a team of uber heroes - that is how big this threat and this film experience is going to be. At least that is the message.
Starcraft 2 - Heart of the Swarm
The next title in the Starcraft II trilogy will get here at some point (Blizzard dont rush these things), but they can build the excitement as well as anyone. Here we get the stunning signature CG trailer elements mixed with gameplay previews. This is the perfect trailer for this game, it enhances the lore that Blizzard has at the heart of the title while showing off a suite of additions to the complex gameplay already available. (I would have preferred them not to take units away though - oh well)
