MakerBot Replicator 2

The first of the MakerBot Replicator 2 3D printers turned up in BE UNSW yesterday and here are some picks of #1 in action. This one is running here in the IT unit and the other zoomed down to the workshop. The setup was a joy, as it essentially just needed the bed leveled and a few minor pieces added before we were off and running. This is a far cry from the 'assemble your own 3D printer' logic that is still a force in this market space.
The pics below show the printing of one of the test files that comes with the machine, a stretchlet that looks superb lit up from below through the transparent build plate. 3D printers are still new and sexy enough that watching them do their thing is just so so cool. Much like the multi-pen plotters of old, seeing this little zip around crafting something that until that moment was on our computers is great.
Now to look forward to all and sundry around here printing out their own creations as that is the whole point.
